In Apology of Socrates, a dialogue written between 393 and 389 BC, Plato (c. 427 - 347 BC) gives a
version of Socrates' own defense after being accused of corrupting the youth and despising the gods. The
apology reflects Socrates' defense before the Athenian jury, so apology has the original meaning
of a formal defense of one's opinions. The dialogue, belonging to Plato's cycle of Socratic or
early works, reconstructs the text of Socrates' apology (defense) before the court, as well as constituting Plato's apology
(praise) of his master.
